Glossary
Answer Engine
A search product that returns a direct synthesized answer instead of a list of links — Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews.
Definition
Answer engines combine LLMs with real-time retrieval to answer user questions in natural language, almost always with cited sources. They differ from chatbots in that they explicitly surface the sources behind each claim. They differ from traditional search in that the answer is the experience — links are supporting evidence, not the primary output.
Example
Perplexity is a pure answer engine: every response is a synthesized paragraph with numbered citations to the sources it used.
